Techos de Mexico (Mexican Roofs) is a cousin to the more well know Habitat for Humanities. While Habitat builds houses for low-income families, the houses can only be used as homes for the families. The Techos de Mexico concept is different. The family lives on the first floor and earns income from a tourist room and patio on the second floor. Fifty percent of the income earned goes to the building fund and fifty percent goes to the family until the fund is paid off. Once their loan is paid in full, one hundred per cent of the money goes to the family. Techos de Mexico creates both a business opportunity aside from standard fishing income and provides low impact tourist accommodations in keeping with the rural atmosphere of Chacala.

Currently six Techos de Mexico homes have been built. More families are waiting their turn. The fund grows with the tourist income that is generated and with private and business donations. The more the Techos houses are rented, the faster the families can repay their loan. The more money that is donated the faster more Techos houses will be built. Each casa has a Techos de Mexico sign in front of the house. While the original concept was to standardize the houses, each owner has created their own look and feel. Some of the houses now have a kitchenette while others do not. All the houses have a view of water except for one. The Techos de Mexico goal is to provide housing and a business for local families while offering affordable accommodations to the visitor who wishes to experience the wonder of Chacala.
